A potluck that doesn’t end in four pies
A potluck works when people know what’s already covered. A sign-up list and two days’ notice do most of the work.
Make the main dish yours
- Cook or buy the centerpiece yourself (the turkey, the lasagna, the big pot of chili) so the meal has an anchor no matter who shows up.
- Tell guests what it is in the invite note, so they can bring things that go with it.
Name the spots, not just the categories
- “A green vegetable” leaves room for three salads. “Green beans or roasted broccoli” doesn’t.
- Aim for about one spot per two guests: a couple of sides, bread, a dessert or two, drinks and ice.
- Leave one open spot called “Surprise us” for the friend who has a signature dish.
Ask about allergies once, early
- A single question with choices (none, nuts, gluten, dairy, something else) gets you answers you can actually plan around.
- Label anything with nuts on the table with a folded card.
Plan for the end of the night
- Have containers or foil ready so leftovers go home with whoever brought them.
- Put out one trash bag and one recycling bag before people arrive. Cleanup goes twice as fast.
